Kakheti: Georgia's Winemaking Heartland
Kakheti produces approximately 70% of all Georgian wine. Stretching along the Alazani River at the foot of the Greater Caucasus Mountains in eastern Georgia, it is one of the most historically significant wine regions in the world — and the heart of the Qvevri tradition.
Geography and Climate
Kakheti sits in a broad valley flanked by the Caucasus to the north and the Gombori mountain range to the south. The Alazani River moderates the climate, which is warm and continental: hot dry summers, mild autumns perfect for extended hang time, and cold winters that allow the vines to rest fully.
The region spans roughly 150 kilometers east to west, with significant variation in elevation, soil type, and microclimate. The best vineyard sites are often on hillside terraces with good drainage and protection from spring frosts.

- Telavi — the regional capital; historic wine culture; many established estates
- Kvareli — cooler, higher elevation; elegant whites and structured reds
- Gurjaani — famous for the Gurjaani DO; known for Rkatsiteli
- Tsinandali — Georgia's best-known white wine appellation; mainly Rkatsiteli and Mtsvane
- Mukuzani — dedicated DO for barrel-aged Saperavi; Georgia's most structured reds
Key Varieties
Kakheti is home to both of Georgia's most internationally recognized varieties:
- Saperavi — the dominant red grape; deeply colored, tannic, age-worthy
- Rkatsiteli — the dominant white grape; versatile; excellent in Qvevri amber style
Lesser-known but increasingly exported: Kisi, Khikhvi, Mtsvane Kakhuri.
Traditional vs. Modern Production
Kakheti is both the stronghold of traditional Qvevri production and home to Georgia's largest industrial wineries.
